There's been a lot of concern over Meta Tags and Search
Engines not indexing pages. This is totally unfounded!
Based on user comments, we tested several pages with variations in Meta Tags and
found other sources that are more reliable. Meta Tags are placed before the "</head>"
tag in your html code.
Title
- Some search engines will display the text located in the Title Tag when your web page is
listed in a search
- Title tags show up in people's bookmarks
- Should be between 5 and 20 words
- Use your Company/Organization name plus keywords
- Cut & Paste your Title in HTML view so it's just under the <head> tag.
- i.e. <title>GulfIslands.Com</title>
Description (Meta Tag)
- Some search engines display this as the summary of your Web page
- Not all search engines use this tag
- Try to limit your Description to less than 200 characters.
- i.e. <meta name="description" content="The Leading Reference on
BC's Gulf Islands">
Keywords (Meta Tag)
- One way to maximize the usefulness of keywords is to incorporate singular and plural
cases of words as well as active and passive verbs
- Do not excessively repeat keywords tag as search engines may penalize you for this
- Not all search engines use this tag
- Try to limit your keywords between 800 and 1,000 characters
- Don't repeat words more than 3 times
- i.e. <meta name=" keywords"
content="gulf islands, canadian san juans, west coast, western canada, british
columbia">
All search engines have a different process for taking site
submission, but you can usually get the process started by navigating to the search engine
home page and looking for the something to effect of "Add Link."
Make sure that there's plenty of text on your page so search engines like Excite
will index it properly. Excite is one of those that do not use Meta Tags. For
best results make sure to submit each page to the search engines, even though they say
it's not necessary.
